UK Employment law – can you leave town if you are signed off for medical reasons?

I was recently signed off work for a few weeks for mental health reasons. After finding my 90 year old mother in shock, and stuck in a bath of scalding water (she did not run any cold – got in and could not get out) and she suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns all over, and which she sadly did not survive after fighting for 40 days in critical care, I have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

We were on holiday in america where my family lives when this happened. I have since come back to the UK, and I am struggling so have been signed off..

I have been extremely depressed over the loss, i loved her very much, and I am stressed and full of worry as her estate is a mess. I just found out last night tha there are some matters of emergency with her estate and her home and my brothers need me. And I need them. Would I be allowed to go home to be with my family while being signed off by a doctor?

Thanks for your answers.

I can’t see why that would be a problem.
If you are signed off then you are signed off for a reason, it doesn’t matter too much whereabouts you are.
If you plan on being out of the uk for long though I would check with your doctor that it’s ok, also if you are on any benefits then it’s best to notify the benefits people as they may need to stop your benefits if you aren’t going to be here.
